Unbundling   Selling various component parts of a product or service separately, usually at a price that reflects costs for only that component of the product or service.

Underground Storage Tanks   See USTs

Unemployed Persons Persons 16 years and over who had no employment during the reference week, were available for work, except for temporary illness, and had made specific efforts to find employment sometime during the 4-week period ending with the reference week. Persons who were waiting to be recalled to a job from which they had been laid off need not have been looking for work to be classified as unemployed.

Unemployment Rate   The unemployment rate represents the number unemployed as a percent of the labor force.

Uniform Freight Classification   See UFC

Uninterruptible Power Supply   See UPS

Unit Load   Packages loaded on a pallet, in a crate or any other way that enables them to be handled at one time as a unit.

Unit Train   A train of a specified number of railcars, perhaps 100, which remain as a unit for a designated destination or until a change in routing is made.

UNIX   The most popular operating system for host computers on the Internet. One does not need to be a UNIX specialist to tap the resources of the Internet, but it helps to know a few fundamental commands. Many of the commands are similar to those in DOS.

UPS   Uninterruptible Power Supply.  A type of battery backup system designed to provide continuous power to critical electrical loads.

Urban Runoff   Storm water from urban areas, which tends to contain heavy concentrations of pollutants from vehicles and industry.

Use Tax   A tax levied on the use of tangible personal property.

Users   Anyone who accesses the SelectSitesTM   web site to search and query either data or sites is considered a user.  Users have limited functionality; however, this is limited mostly to administrative functions.  See also Business Prospects

USGS   The National Mapping Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the descendant of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, formed in 1838 to map the western lands of the then conterminous United States. The USGS took over responsibility for mapping the country in 1879 and has been the primary civilian mapping agency of the United States ever since. The best known of today's USGS maps are the 1:24,000-scale topographic maps, also known as 7.5-minute quadrangles. The USGS began mapping the country at this scale after World War II and completed the program in the late 1980's. More than 57,000 7.5-minute maps were made to cover the 48 conterminous States. This is the only uniform map series that covers the entire area of the United States in considerable detail.  The USGS today produces more than 80,000 different maps. These include the 7.5-minute series, topographic maps at smaller scales, maps of U.S. possessions and territories and of Antarctica, special maps of national parks and monuments, and geologic and hydrologic maps.  http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/topomaps/

USTs   Underground Storage Tanks. Storage tanks that have at least 10 percent (10%) of their storage capacity underground.

V   Back to Top

Var   The unit of reactive power. For a two-wire circuit, the product of the voltage times the current times the sine of the angular phase difference by which the voltage leads or lags the current. Vars and watts combine in a quadrature relationship to form voltamperes.

Ventilated Container   A container designed with openings in the side and/or end walls to permit the ingress of outside air when the doors are closed.

Vocational Schools   Schools in which technical preparation is provided in career fields such as engineering technology, a mechanical, industrial, or practical art or trade, business or health occupations.  See Tech Prep

Voltage   The electric pressure of a circuit, measured in volts. Usually a nominal rating, based on the maximum normal effective difference of potential between any two conductors of the circuit.

Volt   The unit of electromotive force or electric pressure analogous to water pressure in pounds per square inch. It is the electromotive force, which, if steadily applied to a circuit having a resistance of one ohm, will produce a current of one ampere.

Voltage of a Circuit   The electric pressure of a circuit in an electric system measured in volts. It is generally a nominal rating based on the maximum normal effective difference of potential between any two conductors of the circuit.

Voltage Regulator   An electrical device that regulates voltage on distribution lines. It automatically raises and lowers the voltage to maintain required voltage levels for service.

Voltampere (VA)   The basic unit of Apparent Power. The voltamperes of an electric circuit is the mathematical product of the volts and amperes of the circuit. The practical unit of Apparent Power is Kilovoltampere (kVA), which is 1,000 voltamperes.
